Entangled weekly #1

Welcome to the first issue of entangled weekly, a information-packed newsletter that helps readers use science-based tools to improve their life - being it productivity, focus or general well-being.

In this issue, we discover the possibilities of growing new neurons, discover the magical abilities of ginseng, have a quick look at importance of morning sunlight and look at some intertesting internet places.

So come on in, entangle yourself with this curated knowledge picks!

What can i learn today?

Oh, this heavy topic right from the start?

Sure!

Neurogenesis (= production of new neurons) is like a holy grail for everyone trying to improve their life. I remember when i was young and it was a fact, that as an adult, you can’t grow new neurons! - you can only destroy them with use of bad practices (alcohol consumption being the scariest bad boy). This has now been rendered obsolete as the growth of new neurons has been documented in many episodes of human life.

Why should i want this?

If it is not obvious, then let me tell you this:

You are your brain cells.

Everything you do, everything you remember and everything you believe to be true or not - all of it is stored inside your brain, with the help of neurons - specialized cells that create the mass of your brain. Neurons like to connect with other neurons and tell them what is happening.

What do clever pople say about this?

This ancient (26 year old) study suggests that creating an environment that is interesting enough and living in this enriched environment does promote new cells growth.

The same is mentioned by Rusty Gage in this episode of Mind & Matter podcast. He mentions that new neurons are created mainly in hippocampus and even though they do not mean higher IQ or getting any new skills, they help us with getting the details right and improve our ability to deduce patterns from mainly visual stimuli. He accentuates the importance of physical activity. In short - more visual stimuli while moving = more new neurons.

Are there any supplements i can take?

There is no universal pill you take and your brain gets bigger. Rather than that, you should consider more holistic approach - seek regular physical activity in new environment - plan a trip to a trail not yet discovered, travel to unknown place, or turn left where you have always turned right.

Implement growth mindset.

That is, IMHO, essential. Because neurogenesis is not a one-time result of some previously taken special pill or sunbathing under one peculiar wavelength. It is the result of living with mindset that will lead us into new experiences with opened mind.

If you still want to shove some pills down your throat to make the probability of new neurons slightly higher,
